Muharram 2021

The first month of the Islamic calendar - Muharram, started on Tuesday, August 10, 2021. The tenth day of Muharram, known as the Day of Ashura, an occasion when Muslims across the globe mourn the ‘Shahadat’ or martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and his family and followers in the Battle of Karbala – honouring the martyrs by prayer and abstinence from joyous events. During this sacred month, warfare, is forbidden in the Islamic worldview.

Inspired by the abstinence from warfare in the month of Muharram and mourning the impact of warfare, violence and hatred, the middle-school students of Krishnagar Public School took the opportunity to demonstrate their anti-war messages and spreading the virtue of love, peace and forgiveness. The students of Class VI made collages depicting ‘God is One’ – celebrating the belief of Unity and Diversity. The students of Class VII made PowerPoint Presentations on the topics ‘If we don't end the war, the war will end us’ – showcasing the hazards of war and how it is wiser to abstain from it. The students of Class VIII went one step ahead to associate the hazards of war and hatred with modern science and technology recognizing how modern technology is being used to display power, hatred and violence instead of using them for the benefit of mankind by sharing their video messages on ‘Science is the blessing of Almighty which should be used for the betterment of mankind not for destruction.’

The messages, collages and ppts were displayed in virtual assembly during online classes and has also been compiled and uploaded in the school’s official YouTube platform. The observance of Muharram in such a unique way truly resonated with the spirit of this day that is recognized as the day when ‘justice rose against injustice and truth stood up against falsehood and proved that in the course of history Truth has always triumphed over falsehood.’
